If a miracle does not happen, Nepali Congress candidate for the post of President is likely to lose and CPN-UML candidate, Bidhya Bhandari, is likely to win. Even Congress leaders admit that the party candidate for the top post stands no chance.
At a recent Congress meeting, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba had proposed three names for the top post. He informed that former chief justice and then chair of the election government, Khil Raj Regmi, had expressed willingness to field candidature for the position, if parties agree on his name.
Deuba had proposed party leader Man Bahadur Bishwokarma as another candidate. Bishwokarma, according to Deuba, expressed readiness to field candidacy only if there was a guarantee that he will win the race.
Deuba told the meeting that senior Congress leader Kul Bahadur Gurung expressed readiness to field candidature if the party decides accordingly, regardless of winnability.
With UML already picking its candidate for the top post, NC is most likely to choose Gurung as its candidate, a Congress leader informed.
The Congress meeting slated for Tuesday morning will select candidates for the post of President and Vice-president, leaders said.
