D.R. Niraj Adhikari, January 12 - The video contains disturbing footage of Thai Vegetarian Festival in which paraders perform something unusual. The video shows gut-churning rituals as a sign of Taoist devotion to their gods.
The Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, Thailand, is also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival that sees many Thai-Chinese impaling themselves with everything from umbrellas to swords, fire walking on hot coals, and even tying firecrackers to themselves and letting them explode without flinching.
This is a sign of their faith on rituals and in another sign of faithfulness; the participants of the nine-day festival also slash their tongues while in a trance-like state. The celebration begins on the eve of the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. Devotees also refrain from eating meat during the carnival and chant prayers together.
This is a bizarre way of celebrating the festival as most of the paraders can be seen penetrating their cheeks and even the bodies with the shove knives, swords, umbrellas, and a litany of other objects into their faces. The festival, which takes place in Phuket until Nov. 1, celebrates a nine day abstinence from meat to promote good health. This is the second festival to take place this year.
The festival is regarded as one of the colorful events in which they decided to adhere to a strict vegetarian diet and pray to the Nine Emperor Gods. Though the origins of the festival are unclear, it is commonly thought that the festival was bought to Phuket by a wandering Chinese opera group who fell ill with malaria while performing on the island.
The people celebrated by holding a festival that was meant to honor the gods as well as express the people’s happiness at surviving what was, in the 19th century, a fatal illness. Subsequently the festival has grown and developed into a spectacular yearly event that is attended by thousands with participants flying in from China and other Asian destinations.
