India is in fact the world’s second largest English speaking country. In a country which has over 1000 spoken languages, English has slowly come to form the most important part. Thanks to the colonial rule, we even speak a form of British English but thanks to the popularity of American shows, it is the American accent most youngsters have picked up. What we end up with is a truly horrible mish mash of languages and a completely unidentifiable accent.
While the fake accent is looked down upon, the neutral English accent is preferred by many MNCs around the world as it is easy to understand by both: native and non-native English speakers. But the accent? That is universally hated by everyone.We want our kids to go to English schools, talk impeccable English and basically, just act like a true Englishman. And in our craze to talk and act like the English, we often forget that we Indians are suited best to the Hinglish we so love. Or basic English with just a neutral accent. But then, no. We must try and imitate, go and put on that fake accent and just ruin about everything! And if you think no one knows about that terribly fake accent you’re using, you’re wrong. Everyone knows and despises it!
